What Does “Odometer Rollback” Mean?

This is the illegal process of artificially reducing the value displayed on a vehicle’s odometer. The main goal is to make the car appear less used and therefore achieve a higher price on the used car market.

In practice, a vehicle that has traveled 300,000 km may be sold as having only 150,000 km, thereby concealing the actual wear of its mechanical components. This deceptive practice creates significant risks for the buyer, who pays an unjustified price and often faces costly repairs much sooner than expected.

How Is Mileage Fraud Carried Out?

Depending on the type of vehicle, mileage manipulation can be performed in several ways:

• In older vehicles (mechanical odometer): The process involves physically dismantling the instrument cluster and manually adjusting the mechanism to reduce the numbers. This is a simple method but usually leaves visible traces.
• In modern vehicles (digital odometer): The fraud is more complex. A specialized electronic device is connected to the vehicle’s OBD (on-board diagnostics) port, which alters the value stored in the car’s electronic memory.

Why Is It a Serious Problem?

Beyond the legal aspect, odometer rollback is a serious issue for several practical reasons:

• Financial risks: You pay more for a car that is actually worth less.
• Maintenance costs: A high-mileage vehicle requires major servicing and replacement of key components (timing system, clutch, bushings, etc.).
• Safety risks: Critical components, such as the braking system or suspension, may be far more worn than the false mileage suggests, putting your safety and that of your passengers at risk.
